A Trail That Invites Play
Planbureau designed educational nature trails and interactive outdoor installations for WWF. The projects transform expert environmental knowledge into accessible learning experiences for visitors of different ages. Each trail connects educational content with its natural surroundings.
Through physical games and interactive stations, visitors are encouraged to explore environmental topics actively. Planbureau developed the concepts, spatial layouts and physical elements, including technical design and preparation for production. The installations combine education, play and outdoor durability.

Beyond Information Panels
Environmental education often relies on written explanations and information panels. While these can communicate facts, they do not always encourage visitors to engage actively with the subject. Complex ecological relationships can also be difficult to understand through text alone.
WWF wanted educational trails that could make environmental knowledge more accessible and engaging. The content needed to remain scientifically accurate while appealing to children and adults. The natural surroundings also had to remain an essential part of the learning experience.
Turning Knowledge into Play
Each location presented different environmental content and spatial conditions. The challenge was to translate expert knowledge into intuitive interactions without oversimplifying the subject. Visitors needed to understand the activities with minimal instructions.
Planbureau approached educational content, physical interaction and spatial integration as one design task. The installations also needed to withstand outdoor use and remain appropriate to their natural settings. Their construction had to support practical manufacturing and long-term use.
Learning Through Discovery
The educational trails combine interactive stations, physical games and outdoor learning installations. Each element introduces an environmental subject through an activity that encourages visitors to participate rather than simply read.
Planbureau developed the installations from initial concepts to manufacturable designs. The physical elements use a restrained visual approach, allowing the natural environment to remain the focus. Together, the stations create an accessible learning experience that connects discovery, movement and environmental awareness.
