Four Paintings, One Exhibition

Venetian Vedutas was a temporary exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, presenting four paintings of Venice, including a work by Canaletto. With so few artworks, the exhibition design needed to create a complete experience without adding unnecessary objects.

Planbureau developed a spatial and graphic system that treated text as an integral part of the exhibition. Large-scale typography and continuous gold-coloured wave lines connected the paintings into one composition. The result was a unified exhibition built around the relationship between artworks, information and space.

Four Works, One Exhibition

The Venetian Vedutas exhibition was built around only four paintings depicting Venice. A conventional museum arrangement could have left the gallery feeling sparse, with too little visual content to establish a complete exhibition experience.

The task was to give the paintings a strong presence while introducing contextual information. Rather than filling the space with additional objects, the exhibition needed a visual approach that could make the limited selection of artworks feel deliberate and complete.

Giving Typography Equal Weight

The exhibition needed to balance original paintings with explanatory content. Text had to remain readable and informative while also contributing to the visual composition of the gallery.

Planbureau approached typography as a spatial element rather than a separate informational layer. Large-scale text blocks were positioned in relation to the paintings, establishing rhythm and visual density. The challenge was to integrate these elements without allowing the graphic system to overpower the artworks.

Connecting Art Through Graphics

Planbureau designed a composition in which paintings, typography and spatial graphics worked together. Continuous gold-coloured wave lines linked the artworks and text panels across the gallery, visually referencing Venice's relationship with water.

The graphic elements created continuity between works positioned at different points in the space. Large-scale typography added information while contributing to the exhibition's visual structure. Together, these elements transformed four paintings into a coherent exhibition without relying on additional display objects.
