Playing with Balance

The Mushie Stacking Toy is a freely configurable wooden balancing toy designed for Mushie. The product design moves beyond a fixed stacking sequence. Its pieces can connect in many different ways.

Each construction creates a new balance challenge. The form is easy to understand while encouraging open-ended play. Planbureau developed the play concept, visual language, prototypes and production-ready product system.

Predictable Ways to Build

Many stacking toys rely on one correct building sequence. Once the task is solved, they offer little room for further discovery. This limits open-ended experimentation.

Mushie wanted a durable, intuitive toy that would remain varied over time. A clear contemporary character was also important. The brief called for a wooden toy that supports many different ways of building.

Freedom on Stable Foundations

The key challenge was balancing stability with uncertainty. The pieces had to provide a sense of success without becoming too easy to stack. Shape and contact surfaces therefore had to be developed together.

Planbureau tested proportions and connections through prototyping. Grip and safety were also considered. All of this had to be achieved with wooden parts suitable for cost-effective production.

A New Balance Every Time

The set consists of rounded wooden pieces in different shapes. They can be stacked in multiple directions and sequences. There is no single correct solution.

Carefully shaped surfaces provide enough stability while preserving playful uncertainty. Changing configurations encourage fine motor skills, patience and spatial thinking. The same set therefore creates a new building challenge with every play session.
