Logifaces on Stage

Frenák – Birdie is a stage environment designed for Compagnie Frenák’s 2015 performance. Its spatial logic grows from Planbureau’s Logifaces puzzle. The small geometric pieces were translated into stage scale.

The abstract forms both frame and influence movement. The set makes the tension between confinement and freedom physically present. Planbureau developed the system from concept through prototyping.

From Object to Active Stage

Birdie required a stage environment that would do more than act as a backdrop. The set needed to engage directly with the dancers’ movement. It also had to carry the theme of confinement and freedom.

Logifaces offered a strong formal starting point, but it was originally a handheld object. Simply enlarging it would not create an autonomous stage space. The brief therefore became an active, reconfigurable environment.

Static Elements, Changing Space

The key question was how Logifaces geometry could become a usable stage system. The elements needed a strong identity without overpowering the choreography. They also had to work in multiple arrangements.

Planbureau tested scale, connections and movement scenarios through prototypes. The forms could become obstacles, platforms, boundaries or passages. Static objects had to behave as a changing space.

A Transforming Geometric Terrain

The final set translated Logifaces geometry into stage-scale elements. Together they formed an abstract landscape that could change throughout the performance. The same form could become a boundary, platform or route.

The system actively influenced the dancers’ movement. It could express both restriction and release through spatial use. Instead of fixing one image, the set created an open system that the choreography continuously redefined.
