The Shadow of Memory

REMEMBER is a commemorative installation designed by Planbureau for the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest, marking the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust. It uses the existing stone façade to make the act of remembrance visible through natural light.

Words meaning "remember" in different languages are cut from black acrylic and inserted into the joints between stone panels. Sunlight projects their shadows onto the wall, creating messages that appear and disappear throughout the day. The installation remains on view at the Memorial Center.

Remembrance Within Architecture

The Holocaust Memorial Center already carries strong historical and architectural significance. Any new commemorative element needed to respect this context without competing with the existing building.

For the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, the task was to create a visible gesture of remembrance without introducing another conventional monument. The intervention needed to communicate its message clearly while remaining restrained and sensitive to the site.

Intervening Without Alteration

Planbureau sought to minimise physical intervention in the Memorial Center's stone façade. The installation had to avoid additional supporting structures, permanent fixings or modifications to the existing stone panels.

The team developed thin acrylic elements precisely dimensioned to fit into the joints between the slabs. Their orientation and positioning also needed to respond to the south-west-facing wall, allowing sunlight to cast legible shadows while keeping the physical elements almost imperceptible.

Words Revealed by Sunlight

REMEMBER consists of mirror-cut black acrylic words in multiple languages, inserted directly into the joints of the stone façade. When sunlight reaches the elements, their shadows form readable inscriptions on the wall.

The message changes with the sun's position and weather conditions. In direct light, the words become visible, while under cloudy skies they almost disappear. This changing presence gives the installation its meaning, expressing remembrance as something that must be continually renewed.
